چکیده

Multiwavelength observations of the black hole X-ray binary XTE J1118+480 have offered abundant spectral and timing information about the source and have thus provided serious challenges to theoretical models. We propose a coupled accretion-jet model to interpret the observations. We model the accretion flow as an outer standard thin accretion disk truncated at a transition radius by an inner hot accretion flow. The accretion flow accounts for the observed UVand X-ray emission, but it substantially underpredicts the radio and infrared fluxes, even after we allow for nonthermal electrons in the hot flow. We attribute the latter components to a jet. We model the jet emission by means of the internal shock scenario, which is widely employed for gamma-ray bursts. In our accretion-jet model of XTE J1118+480, the jet dominates the radio and infrared emission, the thin disk dominates the UV emission, and the hot flow produces most of the X-ray emission. The optical emission has contributions from all three components: jet, thin disk, and hot flow. The model qualitatively accounts for timing features, such as the intriguing positive and negative time lags between the optical and X-ray emission and the wavelengthdependent variability amplitude. A Jet Model for the Broadband Spectrum of Xte J1118+480: Optically Thin Synchrotron X-rays in the Low/hard Spectral State

Observations have revealed strong evidence for powerful jets in the Low/Hard states of black hole candidate X-ray binaries. Correlations between the radio and IR, and radio and X-ray bands suggest that significant contributions to the observed broadband spectrum originate via synchrotron, and also possibly inverse Compton, emission from the jet. We show here that, for reasonable assumptions abo...

Further evidence for variable synchrotron emission in XTE J1118+480 in outburst

We present simultaneous multicolor infrared and optical photometry of the black hole X-ray transient XTE J1118+480 during its short 2005 January outburst, supported by simultaneous X-ray observations. The variability is dominated by short timescales, 10 s, although a weak superhump also appears to be present in the optical. The optical rapid variations, at least, are well correlated with those ...

A jet model for the broadband spectrum of XTE J1118+480 Synchrotron emission from radio to X-rays in the Low/Hard spectral state

Observations have revealed strong evidence for powerful jets in the Low/Hard states of black hole candidate X-ray binaries. Correlations, both temporal and spectral, between the radio – infrared and X-ray bands suggest that jet synchrotron as well as inverse Compton emission could also be significantly contributing at higher frequencies. We show here that, for reasonable assumptions about the j...

We have obtained optical and infrared photometry of the quiescent soft Xray transient XTE J1118+480. In addition to optical and J-band variations, we present the first observed Hand Ks-band ellipsoidal variations for this system. We model the variations in all bands simultaneously with the WD98 light curve modeling code. The infrared colors of the secondary star in this system are consistent wi...

A Unified Description of the Timing Features of Accreting X-ray Binaries

We study an empirical model for a unified description of the power spectra of accreting neutron stars and black holes. This description is based on a superposition of multiple Lorentzians and offers the advantage that all QPO and noise components are dealt with in the same way, without the need of deciding in advance the nature of each component. This approach also allows us to compare frequenc...
